That's No Apple...That's a Head!

Just cleaning up an old blog I used to have. This was the only entry. lol. I posted it March 13, 2010

"So the other day I was with some friends and there was an Anime movie playing. During part of it, this woman gives a younger girl what looked to be a large apple, only it was the size of a large melon. We looked at each other, obviously indicating how we knew that was no apple.

Then he said to me... "That's no apple, that's a head." and we both started busting up laughing. Not only because it was funny, but it was in an accent that is so ... interesting, that you would need to hear to understand. Imagine the word 'head' pronounced 'hey ed'. Yup."

This is what happens when experienced Flash Animators have to deal with their own creations. It's intense.

And then, for those who are new at animating... NEVER name your person "the chosen one". You will find out why by watching this video:

I hope you enjoyed it. So if anything like that ever happens to you, just push the big X in the top right corner of the screen.

So it's just a myth

The whole daddy long leg spider thing came to me as I was at work. One coworker of mine age 63 was talking, and I mentioned daddy long legs for no particular reason, when he bursted out saying that they aren't spiders and they aren't poisonous ("It's just a myth!"). I looked at my other coworker of my same age, and gave him a wierd look.

I responded, "I think 8 legs means it's a spider" but he told me the body is different than "Normal" spiders. I agreed. But I've always heard they're poisonous, so I told him that I still think they're poisonous. I'm always right... wrong.
Anyway, I decided to make this into some sort of contest by polling every single person who strolled by. Since I work at the Church Office Building in Downtown Salt Lake City, that wasn't hard, as I pass many electricians, custodians, manual laborers, and the whole bunch. I began randomly polling everyone, and the next day everyone was asking me how the poll was going.

I decided to get to the internet and make those who visit my blog (The millions of loyal fans) join in on the fun. So far I've had a great (uh huh...) response. But that's aside the point.

Out of 15 people I polled at the Church Office Building, 13 said it was poisonous, and 12 said it was a spider. Leaving 3 saying it was NOT a spider, and 2 saying it WASN'T posionous.

I was proud of my accomplishment, proving that I was right. It is a spider, it is poisonous. But then I looked on the "web" (this time, pun intended). I found out that although the daddy long leg is an arachnid, it is NOT classified as a "Spider" as we know it. It is actually a harvestman, or of the order of "opiliones".

There is a point of confusion, however upon the statement that it is not a spider.
The Daddy long leg is not a "true" spider, but the Daddy long-legs spider is. If that's not confusing I don't know what is.

And to set the record straight on if they are poisonous, I asked my friends at Mythbusters, and they told me to look here: Is the daddy long-leg poisonous?

Although it has venom, it is not potent enough to harm a human, unlike a black widow which would kill a human being.

FINAL RESULTS
Is the daddy long leg a spider? It is an arachnid, but not the same order as a Spider.

Is the daddy long leg poisonous? It has venom, but definately not strong enough to envenomate a human, even if it does penetrate the skin with a bite.
